Local Walks – Ploughman Wood

Whenever the sun is out in Mapperley it seems everyone gets out for a stroll. It took us 3 hours to walk from Mapperley Top along to Dorket Head, down through Woodborough and back to Lambley via the historic Ploughman Wood where we tookthis panoramic photo looking back over Woodborough with Dorket Head at the extreme left.

This wood was once part of a much larger area of woodland that dates back to the 13th century. It is mainly ash/oak woodland with some other species and this mix provides an excellent range of habitats for wildlife. The presence of substantial quantities of dead wood provide an excellent habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna. Over 280 species of invertebrates have so far been recorded.

Antony Michael told us: I love that walk, and never fail to stand at the top of the hill by the wood to gaze down at Woodborough village. During some dawn walks the village is covered in mist and only the rooftops visible. We live in a beautiful part of the world 😊

Joy Sherriff said: We love Ploughman’s Wood, especially when the bluebells are out.😁

Ploughman Wood is cared for by the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust team based Attenborough Nature Reserve – they do an amazing job caring for these and other special sites across the South of the county. The wood is particularly splendid in spring as wood anemones give way to bluebells- with the wonderful ‘dawn chorus’ of bird song as a soundtrack for those willing to make an early start.

Many people asked how to access Plough Wood, so we shared this section of a map.
