Majestic Mapperley

Many thanks to Angie for her memories of Mapperley and the Majestic Cinema on Woodborough Road.

I was born in 1945 and lived on Kenrick Road, there were very few cars then ,we used to go car spotting on Porchester road.

Our vegetables were delivered by horse by Horace and his wagon.

All us kids used to love to go up to the Majestic Cinema every Saturday afternoon to see all the crazy films like Flash Gordon and the crazy gang , my favourite was the cowboy films which gave me my love of fast horses. I remember the coronation on a tiny TV in a neighbour’s house and we all sat round in awe of it. My love of horses led me into becoming a stable girl at Newmarket and leading up many winners. I live in Andover now but still have family in Nottingham.

My dad helped to build three collieries, Gedling, Calverton and Cotgrave. My dad used to watch the ladies stand out in the rain in Cotgrave with their pushchair waiting for a bus, so he built them a shelter in his lunch hour and erected it for them. It eventually blew down in 1988 during a gale.

I follow Mapperley People because I miss Nottingham but my kids are here. I visit when I can. I have a thousand memories of my childhood, but too many to mention. It was very happy time. I still visit as often as I can while I can still drive. I love your site and will continue to read it.

Thank you

Angie

The building is now disused and may be demolished in a proposed development of the site.
