Wildgoose Designs

Mapperley People welcomes Sarah Sewell of Wildgoose Designs. Sarah produces individual and unique embroidered gifts from her studio in Mapperley.

Wildgoose Designs has been operating in Mapperley for the last ten years. Owner Sarah explains how it all started:

I began crafting and sewing in 2010, having been told at school that I couldn’t sew! I subsequently completed courses in sewing, felting and mixed media. My work varies, depending on my mood or what fabric I have available. I have discovered that just about anything is possible! My particular love is free-machine (or free-motion) embroidery. It’s like free-hand drawing with a sewing machine. Kirsty Allsopp calls it “the crack cocaine of craft world” and I have to agree!  I also have an obsession with Liberty print fabric and often add splashes of colour to my pictures with it.

Sarah Sewell

Sarah Sewell creates beautiful items using free-machine embroidery and gorgeous fabrics – mainly Liberty of London tana lawn fabric or Harris Tweed. Being hand-made, each piece is individual and unique.

Inspired By Nature

Much of Sarah’s work is inspired by nature; birds, butterflies, wild flowers and bees often feature in her work. She adds a splash of colour to her work with Liberty fabrics and Harris Tweed.

Sarah says:

‘I have lived in Mapperley for over 20 years and really love it. It’s such a friendly area, we have lovely neighbours and the ‘Top’ has changed beyond all recognition in that time. Mapperley has a great selection of shops, bars and eating places. The only downside for me are the hills which are particularly interesting in icy winters! I recently had a home studio built so I’m not planning on leaving Mapperley any time soon!’
