July 2026 seemed a quiet month, probably due to the heatwaves and drought conditions. The heat must have been getting to us all, with several posts about missing cats and children’s cuddly toys.

Blyth Street, along with Staples Street and Querneby Road took their name from families who held land in the ‘Maperley Closes’ going back 400 years. These families were also reported to be related to Lord Byron.
Tower House
Hearth & History responded:
I’d have to look a bit deeper but from what I can make out, it is called Tower House and in the late 19th century belonged to John Gear, a local fishmonger, prominent businessman, and nominee for Councillor of St Mary’s parish in 1894. In the 30s, the house belonged to the Clarke family and in the 50s, it belonged to the Seymours. I’ll see what else I can find

I can’t remember exactly who, but I lived in staples street in the 80s, next door to me was mr and Mrs Dale an elderly couple who had lived there the whole of their married life, they knew the history, apparently it was a well known businessman in the area who used to watch his workers come up the wells rd in horse and carts from the tower.. half a story I know but it was years ago I was told about it. –

Aww I used to live here when it was a kids home. First proper place I felt safe and happy. I’ve got some great memories from this place. It felt like home. Remember being able to go up to the top a couple of times at night to see the views
World Cup Fever
We posted for a resident, whose son had been collecting Panini World Cup stickers, had around 200 swaps and was determined to finish the book. He asked whether anyone would be interested in meeting on Mapperley top this Sunday to do some trades?
There were plenty of like mined parents and a meet up was arranged at the Bread and Bitter where they sat outside and do some trades.
Well done Studio 3 and their dancers who performed at the Waterfront Music Festival at the Canalhouse pub in town.
The heatwave meant that our homes were stifling in the evening and one reader messaged us with some photos taken on an evening stroll.
