April 2026 was a month of reflection

Remembering Bodie

On 25th April we remembered a popular local figure who died in February.

Martin Bolus known to many as Bodie.

His family and close friends invited everyone to an evening of music, stories, and togetherness to celebrate his life at the Mapperley Plains Social Club.

We posted:

Martin sadly passed away in February, and we would love to gather with everyone who knew and cared for him — to laugh, talk, sing, listen to music, dance, share stories and memories, and raise a glass in his honour. Alongside a playlist of some of Bodie’s favourite tracks, there will be a live performance from Old Nic Trading Company. There will be a buffet, and the bar will be well stocked with both alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks. We’ll also have a display of some of Bodie’s books, records, and iconic fashion pieces. You’re warmly welcome to take something home so these treasures can continue to be enjoyed. If you wish to give a small donation, there will be a box supporting three charities chosen by the family — a reflection of Bodie’s lifelong generosity. Everyone is welcome’

I’m very sorry to hear this. I first remember Martin from when he was working at the Sherwood branch of the TSB. He struck me as a very efficient and organised person (he later told me he had memorised all the branch sort codes-a man after my own heart!) ; We used to see him years later around our area, always walking at a determined pace. We then got to speaking with him frequently, often in Sainsbury’s Arnold or whilst out walking, always about health matters and the state of the country! He never looked well, but kept a cheerful demeanor. Recently we had even asked the security men in Sainsbury’s to keep an eye out for him as we hadn’t seen him since before Christmas. So sad to learn of his passing, a genuinely nice chap. I hope he has passed on to a better world. – Andrew Liepins

Great bloke that I knew from the Arrow pub but also TSB bank where me Auntie used to work with him and also I used to see him at the Good Shepherd Catholic church mass!!!!🙏🙏🙏RIP – Michael Robert Bent

Top bloke was Bodie ❤️Played cricket with him at Arnold Cricket club for years and shared a few beers at Forest games. – Adam Charles

Beautiful Woodthorpe Park

We posted this image of artwork by Anna Wheelhouse on the Severn Trent Water installation in Woodthorpe Park.

Morning light on Woodthorpe Park. When art and nature combine, our world becomes one.

Remembering The Bulsara Family

Thanks to Rich Hayes for sending this message and photo of the memorial at Carlton Cemetery to the parents of Freddie Mercury.

“If you could thank Jer and Bomi for the greatest gift to the world. Our most famous Mapperley residents?”

Here are some of your comments:

Kirkland Laing is also in there up the hill from the Bulsara’s and to the left. He was a British and European welterweight boxing champion and beat the great Roberto Duran in 1982 – Richard Lawson

I love the quote at the bottom – ‘Heaven for everyone’ – a nice touch – Sylvia Wardle

We used to regularly see Mrs Bulsara doing her shopping at Mapperley. Loved her famous son and still do – Joy Sherriff
