On 5th September, Mapperley said farewell to Roger Bexon after Mellish Rugby Club announced:
Yesterday we said goodbye to our former Bar Manager and a true Mellish legend, Roger Bexon. Roger was a long-time supporter of Mellish RFC and a much-loved and familiar face around the club for many years. He will be remembered for his warmth, friendship, humour and stories. Thank you for everything, Roger. You will be very much missed and fondly remembered by everyone at Mellish RFC. Our love and thoughts are with Ange and all of Roger’s children and family at this time.

Roger was always the first person to speak to when visiting Mellish.
He kindly supported our quest to get a pavement installed nearby linking the club to footpaths further along Mapperley Plains. Many signatures were added to the petition from people using the clubhouse.
Carlton Active Leisure Centre
On 21st September we posted:
Demolition of the Richard Herrod Leisure Centre is imminent. The artist’s impression of the new facility is shown too. Built in the 1960s, land between Coningswath Road and Foxhill Road Central in Carlton was developed, featuring a dry ski slope and a golf range. The community centre was named after a long-serving local councillor. The centre permanently closed in May 2026. It will be replaced by Carlton Active, a landmark new health, wellbeing and leisure hub with an 8 lane swimming pool.

82 thousand views and 312 comments later, we trawled through them. Unfortunately many were disgraceful and ignorant comments from bigoted people with no connection to the area. Commenting was suspended and reluctantly, the post itself removed. Here’s the most sensible, from Gayle Harris. Thank-you Gayle
I think the building is great, not sure why people think it will look out of place. Much better than the building that is there now. I love the idea of a new larger leisure centre, so many more opportunities for locals to get involved in. Why are there questions about the new building being a religious inclined build, we’ve known for years the intention was for extended leisure activities. Are some people unaware that their questions could be taken as discriminatory?
Mapperley’s Street Names
On 30th September we took a tour of the area to photograph the street name signs that feature ‘Mapperley’ We then asked:
Did you know that the name Mapperley has worked its way into eight local street names. Have we missed any?

One had been omitted and it wasn’t long before Paul Johnson reminded us with “Yes you missed one. Mapperley Park Drive off Magdala”
Thanks Paul. Here it is, slightly obscured.
