Tutor Profile: Santosh Ghosh
Hello! Bonjour! Guten Tag! ¡hola!
My name is Santosh (Tosh for short), and though I was born in Liverpool, I now live with my wife and family in Mapperley.
I attended schools in Liverpool, Bradford and then Worcester, where I did my A Levels in 1986. I studied for my degree in Modern and Medieval Languages, focusing on German, French and Linguistics, at St. John’s College Cambridge before completing my secondary PGCE in MFL at the University of Leeds in 1992.
I lived in Marburg, Germany, for a couple of years where I taught English and French at a school for the blind and partially sighted. I have also spent extensive periods of time in France.
In the UK, I have been a teacher for some 31 years, delivering courses in MFL and EFL at a sixth-form college in Yorkshire, an independent grammar school in Cambridgeshire and a few schools in the Nottingham area. More recently, I have been doing a lot of adult evening classes, as well as private work, teaching German and French to A Level and Spanish to GCSE, as well as a few stints away from home, teaching EFL for an international language school.
I’m obviously a passionate linguist and try to listen to and read something in one of my foreign languages at least once a day – one of my favourite apps, for instance, is my ‘Tagesschau’ app which enables me to keep up to date with German news whenever I like. Apart from that, I’m an avid reader (I love biographies, psychological thrillers, crime, historical and political books in English, as well as my other languages).
I’m also in the process of writing my own autobiography, which I hope to have completed by early 2024. I listen to quite a bit of music, am obsessed with Star Trek and mad on Liverpool FC!
Although I am working with a number of students at the moment, primarily online, I am still available to take on more learners in the languages mentioned above. I can either teach online, using Zoom or Teams, or face-to-face, as long as the venue is within the Nottingham area and accessible using public transport.
