The grave of legendary cricketer Arthur Shrewsbury

The grave of legendary cricketer Arthur Shrewsbury at the All Hallows Churchyard in Gedling, Nottingham.

When asked which batsman he would most want in his team, Dr W G Grace replied, "Give me Arthur."

Arthur Shrewsbury (1856-1903) was the first Nottinghamshire batsman to score a double century. He played in 23 Test Matches and was the first to pass 1,000 Test runs. Together with fellow cricketer Alfred Shaw, they organised the earliest cricket and rugby tours to Australia. The rugby tour of 1888, run by Shaw and Shrewsbury, is regarded as the first ever 'British Lions' party.

Wrongly believing himself suffering from an incurable disease, Shrewsbury shot himself and was buried in Gedling churchyard two days later. The inscription on the tomb reads:

To the memory of Arthur Shrewsbury, for 23 years a member of the Notts County Cricket XI and a renowned cricketer. This monument was erected to perpetuate the esteem and regard of his relatives and friends.

Thanks to Jo Singh for providing more photos taken by her father in the 70s and 80s. These are of the Marple Square flats on Woodborough Road off Cranmer Street. Built with its own neighbourhood shopping centre in the 1970s and taking its name from Marple Street, it went into steady decline and was demolished in 2002.

National Registration identity card from the 1940s.

It shows the address as Emily Terrace, Dawson Street off Carlton Road (not to be confused with Dowson Street off Gordon Road). This area was replaced with what is now known as Hooten Street Industrial Estate.

The high rise flats of Burrows Court, (built in 1967) appear to have taken its name from Burrows Street in the same area.

Identity Cards were replaced by NHS Cards on its formation in 1948.

We've chosen this one as the grave is of a soldier from Thorneywood. It also reminds us that the uprising in Ireland during the Great War took it's toll on the British Military.

Private 2961 Ernest Farnsworth of the 2nd/7th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) was killed on 26th April 1916 in Dublin.

Ernest was living with his family in Thorneywood and working as a Lace Draughtsman when he enlisted in October 1914. In April 1916 he was stationed in Dublin with the Notts and Derby Regiment during the Irish Rebellion. On 26th April 1916, he was engaged in an attack on 25 Northumberland Road and Mount Street Bridge Dublin, when he was shot and killed. Thirty one Sherwood Foresters were killed during the 1916 Irish Rebellion.

Also killed, was one of Ernest Farnsworths officers, 39 year old 2nd Lieutenant, Montague Bernard Browne who was from Collingham, Nottinghamshire.

Montague Browne was severely wounded during an attack on Clanwilliam House, and died from his wounds on 28th April 1916.

Montague Browne and Ernest Farnsworth were buried together in a grave at the Deans Grange Cemetery in Dublin. Montague Browne's sister wrote to Ernest Farnsworth's mother informing her of the burial, and offering to include Ernest on the memorial stone to Montague Browne, but Ernest's elder brother William travelled to Dublin and had Ernest's body exhumed. William Farnsworth was serving with 2nd Battalion, Warwickshire Regiment and William returned to Nottingham with the body of his brother, with Ernest being finally laid to rest at the Nottingham General Cemetery.

Sadly, William Farnsworth himself was killed near Ypres just over a year later, on 9th October 1917. He is commemorated at the Tyne Cot Memorial.

Nottingham city centre is recognisable in the distance and the cleared ground is certainly the demolition of the old St Anns estate.
