March 2025
2nd March we posted: The sun is out in Mapperley and it seems everyone has been out for a stroll. It took us 3 hours to walk from Mapperley Top along to Dorket Head, down through Woodborough and back to Lambley stopping at the historic Ploughman Wood for this panoramic photo looking back over Woodborough with Dorket Head at the extreme left.
This wood was once part of a much larger area of woodland that dates back to the 13th century. It is mainly ash/oak woodland with some other species and this mix provides an excellent range of habitats for wildlife. The presence of substantial quantities of dead wood provide an excellent habitat for a wide range of flora and fauna. Over 280 species of invertebrates have so far been recorded.

Antony Michael told us: I love that walk, and never fail to stand at the top of the hill by the wood to gaze down at Woodborough village. During some dawn walks the village is covered in mist and only the rooftops visible. We live in a beautiful part of the world
Joy Sherriff said: We love Ploughman’s Wood, especially when the bluebells are oMany people asked how to access Plough Wood, so we shared this section of a map.

On 5th March we posted this image from the external wall of the former Manvers School on Carlton Road which closed in 1995. The main building is now the Oxford Business College and there is lots happening at the site. The area on the city side has also been cleared. We asked whether anyone knows the origins of this decorative feature on the wall?

Ian told us:
The first image features Stephenson’s Rocket which won a competition at the Rainhill Trials, the winner won the contract to build the Manchester to Liverpool Railway. I grew up in Rainhill!
It would suggest that the frieze is a homage to British engineering ad the other structure appears to be the Forth Rail Bridge in Scotland.

Stephen Rab Sladen: told us his memory of the school:
I was there in the late sixties and left just before the girls arrived. Some of the teachers I remember. Hollingsworth, Wynn, Gutman, Lance Wright, Drew, Sanderson, Mcgowan and Cork. Memories of the cross country run across The Mounts In freezing weather, in shorts, vest and black plimmies.A good school and mates then.
On 10th March we posted:
Well this was a bright start to a Monday morning for the staff and visitors at the Mapperley Surgery of Victoria and Mapperley Practice on Woodborough Road. They are loving their new art in the car park.

‘Pepperpot’ number one of four air-shafts above the Great Northern Railway’s Mapperley Tunnel that runs below Mapperley Plains, where it meets Arnold Lane and Gedling Road.

This 1044 metre tunnel was built in 1875 for the Derbyshire and Staffordshire Extension of the Great Northern Railway. This line ran from Colwick Junction in Nottingham to Egginton Junction in South Derbyshire.

How about this aerial shot of The Little Red Engine. This train sculpture is in Woodthorpe Park on the former Nottingham Suburban Railway line as it went beneath Woodthorpe Drive and through to Daybrook Station,
