May 2025

On 1st May we posted:

My partner and I have been debating what ‘Terri’s’ used to be at the old Fleurtations premises (we aren’t from the area).

I thought maybe a hardware store and he thought a convenience store.

Does anyone remember?

The people of Mapperley didn’t disappoint

Lindsay Warner told us:

50 yrs ago ish it was a leather shop! Before that no idea  Wonder what it will be next?

Lorna Thomas had a great memory:

In the early eighties it was a furniture shop for a while. One evening my ex husband was coming out of the co-op, opposite, and spotted someone crawling around the floor and hiding behind the furniture. He rang Carlton police station to report it when he got home. They agreed to check it out. Rang back about half an hour later to tell us it was nothing to worry about. Apparently the cops had received a tip off that the Co-op was going to be robbed that night. The people my ex-husband saw were cops on a stake out, hoping to catch them. Say no more!!!

Christine Fletcher Noble remembered the name Webbs:

Many years ago it was a general store. That was about 1970. I think it was called Webbs but could be wrong. X

Cathy Wiser, the current owner had more detail:

At the turn of the century as in 1900 it was a tea room and considerably smaller. Webbs was a store like the Coop (before the Coop) about 70 years ago. Terri’s was a freezer centre. It’s also been Discount Bedroom Furniture and a leather and fur coat shop. We’ve been there 43 years, according to Graeme and will still be there for a while yet without a retail outlet.

Sara Webb and Karen Watson shared their memories

Sara – It was my Grandpa’s shop/chemist called Webb’s

Karen Watson – Thanks Sara, I can remember calling in for sweets on my way home quite often.

Sara Webb – Karen, that’s lovely!! He loved his shop and was very proud of it

Roger Smith told us:

In the 60’s it was two shops owned by Webbs. One side was a pharmacy and related sales, the other side was a general grocers

On the 22nd May we posted this appeal:

URGENT – please post. Can anyone help?

There’s a bird trapped in a conifer on Westdale Lane. Stuck in what appears to be some blue netting and can’t get free. Rang RSPCA and they said they can’t help. It’s in my neighbour’s garden. I can’t get it as the bird is stuck higher than the house. Can anyone please help? I can’t just watch it die. Thanks in advance!

Coppice Contracts responded. They are offer a service in tree, woodland, garden and countryside management, with a focus on conservation. They posted this:

A non-profitable but rewarding afternoon sorting out a starling that had been stuck tangled in a tree since at least 10am! It flew away before we could take it to a rescue for assessment.  We wish it ‘Good luck!’

On 25th May we came across this photograph on a page called Disused Railway Tunnels UK

The western (Woodthorpe) end of the Mapperley Tunnel on the Great Northern Railway “Derbyshire Extension”. Photograph dated 27th March 1971 which was 10 years after the closure of the tunnel.

Now part of the housing estate off Whitby Crescent. The houses on the left of the embankment are on Weaverthorpe Road.

Photographer: David Blower. Thanks to Disused Railway Tunnels UK.

Peter Mackness cleared up the confusion between the Mapperley and Sherwood tunnels:

To clarify… Mapperley tunnel is frequently mistaken for the tunnels on the Suburban Railway at each end of Sherwood Station. The tunnel running beneath Mapperley Rise, Morley Avenue and Walter Halls School is Sherwood Tunnel. The short bore beneath Woodthorpe Park is Ashwells Tunnel.
