Christmas Day 2025 and this sign is still warning

Christmas Day 2025 and this sign is still warning people using Woodthorpe Park, despite the pitch & putt course having been closed since at least 2023. Woodthorpe Grange Park opened in June 1922 and the pitch and putt course was included soon afterward. The City Councill have not officially announced its closure but stopped being maintained post pandemic.

Thanks to Tony Gretton, we now have a rare photogr

Thanks to Tony Gretton, we now have a rare photograph of the parrot that gave ‘The Green Parrot Cafe’ its name, and the man that gave his name to the hardware shop ‘Whiting and Sons’ at 930 Woodborough Road. We are not sure when the shop closed or the parrot’s name, but the photo was taken in 1984 at the Wollaton Show. The parrot was kept on the counter of the shop.

Here's a sample of work at the Christmas Tree Festival that is underway at St Jude's Church. This free family event (with refreshments) runs from Thursday to Saturday 6th December, 10.30-7.30pm.
There are over 50 Christmas Trees!

The halo is created when moonlight passes through tiny, hexagonal ice crystals in clouds, typically high-altitude cirrus clouds.

Captured this week in the night sky above Mapperley.

Steve, our resident astronomer managed to capture the Triangulum Galaxy.

Captured with my Seestar S50, this is a stack of 600 x 30 second exposures.

The Triangulum Galaxy also known as M33 is about 3 million light-years away from Earth. While its mass is not well understood — one estimate puts it between 10 billion and 40 billion times the sun's mass — what is known is it's the third largest member of the Local Group, or the galaxies that are near the Milky Way which also includes the Andromeda Galaxy (M31).
